(Powerfully Unlocks Phytate-Bound Phosphorus)

What is Phytate and Why It Matters in Poultry Feed?

  • Most plant-based raw materials store phosphorus in the form of phytate (phytic acid). Poultry produce very little natural phytase, so a large portion of this phosphorus stays unavailable, and phytate also binds important nutrients like calcium, zinc, iron, manganese, amino acids, and energy, reducing digestibility and performance.

Result without phytase:

  • Higher requirement of inorganic phosphorus (DCP/MCP) – Reduced mineral and protein utilization – Wet litter and more phosphorus excretion – Lower growth / egg performance potential.

Mode of Action (How Phytase Works)

  • Stepwise action in the gut:
    • Hydrolyzes phytate (IP6) into lower inositol phosphates (IP5 → IP4 → IP3…)
    • Releases available phosphorus (P)
    • Reduces phytate’s “anti-nutritional” binding effect on:
      • Calcium & trace minerals
      • Amino acids & protein digestion
      • Energy utilization

Key Benefits in Poultry

  • Nutritional & Economic Benefits
    • Improves available phosphorus from plant ingredients – Reduces DCP/MCP usage and lowers feed cost – Enhances calcium utilization and Ca:P balance
  • Performance Benefits
    • Better growth rate & FCR in broilers – Improved bone strength and reduced leg weakness risk – Supports egg production and shell quality in layers/breeders.
  • Gut & Litter Benefits
    • Lower undigested minerals → improved gut efficiency, Reduced phosphorus excretion → drier litter, cleaner environment

Phytate-Rich Poultry Feed Raw Materials

Phytate is naturally high in many plant ingredients commonly used in poultry feed, such as:

Soybean meal/full-fat soya, Rice bran/Deoiled rice bran, Wheat & wheat bran, Maize/corn and corn by-products (DDGS), Groundnut cake, Sunflower cake, Rapeseed meal, Sesame cake, Cottonseed meal.

Phytase supplementation is especially valuable when diets contain higher levels of bran, oilseed meals, or by-products.

Dosage & Directions

  • Standard dose: 200 gm/ton of complete feed
    • Premix in minimal quantity (1-2 kg) of DORB or Calcite thoroughly for best response.
